Academic burnout: when studying leaves you empty

पढ़ाई से बर्नआउट (थकान)

Burnout results from prolonged stress without enough recovery. It shows as exhaustion, detachment from studies and a sense of not achieving anything.

Burnout can overlap with depression, so a proper assessment helps decide the right support.

Medically reviewed by Dr. Kuldeep Budania, MBBS, MD Psychiatry

Common symptoms

  • Physical and emotional exhaustion that rest does not fix
  • Cynicism or not caring about studies anymore
  • Falling efficiency despite long hours
  • Frequent illness, headaches, sleep problems

Causes

  • Long-term overload without breaks
  • Lack of control over schedule; unclear goals

Risk factors

  • Perfectionism, poor sleep, lack of social support

For students

  • Schedule recovery as seriously as study: sleep, movement, one hobby

  • Talk to a mentor about workload

How it is diagnosed

  • Separating burnout from depression, anxiety, anaemia or thyroid problems

Classification: ICD-11 QD85ICD-11 lists burn-out as an occupational phenomenon, not a medical condition; academic burnout is described by analogy.

Treatment options

  • Watch for withdrawal, sleep change or talk of hopelessness, and act early
